The future of activetech in the UK

UK activetech company formations climbed steadily from five in 2016 to a peak of 17 in 2019, then declined to four in 2025 — the lowest annual total since 2017. Investment has followed a similar arc: after climbing from £6.4m in 2018 to a £46.9m peak in 2022, annual fundraising has declined for three consecutive years, closing 2025 at £13.3m.

The 2026 first quarter has opened with £11.0m raised, already approaching all of 2025’s total and pointing to a possible inflection. Whether that becomes a real recovery or a single quarter of catch-up will likely depend on how the sector adapts to the rise of GLP-1 weight loss medications and the maturing of consumer fitness app subscriptions.

Personal training and fitness apps remain the largest cluster in the top 50. Second Nature (£14.8m) and Habitual (£3.28m) both target weight loss through nutrition and behavioural change, while Runna (£8.24m), Coopah (£3.90m), Pillar App (£918,000), and Bua Fit (£670,000) focus on running and outdoor fitness coaching. Hero (£1.71m) and Movetru (£1.36m) apply AI body scanning to home rehabilitation, MyARC (£2.85m) connects fitness creators with subscription customers, and Magic Mountain (£1.92m, exited) combines social tracking with goal-setting.

Studio operators Blok (£8.75m), Solo60 (£1.81m), and reFIT (£1.34m) round out the consumer cluster, with Athlo (£560,000) running a gym-pass marketplace and Kuula (£456,000, dead) attempting an online yoga and class platform.

Wearables and biometric sensing form a second distinct cluster. Carv (£10.6m) leads with smart ski boots, joined by SmartCricket.com (£10.9m) in cricket sensors, NURVV (£6.93m, dead) in running insoles, Movmenta (£1.60m) in sportswear sensors, FlowBio (£1.10m) in hydration tracking, Limina (£419,000) in sweat-based muscle fatigue monitoring, Sweati (£668,000) in hydration and glucose, auryx (£1.49m) in earbud-based health sensing, and SERG Technologies (£2.82m) in subconscious muscle contraction analysis.

Recovery and rehabilitation specialists NuroKor (£3.19m) and MyoMaster (£1.10m) sit alongside GaitQ (£2.81m), which builds wearable walking assistance for people with Parkinson’s, and Suji (£8.16m) and Hytro (£3.64m) in blood flow restriction training.

A third cluster centres on sports analytics, team management, and community platforms. Sportlight Technology (£13.9m) and Myzone (£12.8m) lead with player analytics and gym software, Playfinder (£7.16m) and RacketPal (£1.93m) operate sports venue and player matchmaking, OPNPlay (£425,000) handles team management, Clubbie (£422,000) runs an amateur sports social network, Aceify (£422,000) connects tennis coaches with clients, GolfPod (£667,000) builds compact driving range technology, and ForceTeck (£550,000) applies AI video analysis to athlete performance.

Together, these three clusters describe a UK activetech sector that grew rapidly through the late-2010s and pandemic period, has since faced a tougher funding environment alongside changing consumer behaviour, and is now showing tentative early-2026 signs of renewed investor interest.
